NMC Jazz Ensembles Present Spring Concert On April 29

The Northwestern Michigan College Jazz Ensembles will present a Spring Concert on Friday, April 29 at 8:00 p.m. in the Milliken Auditorium of the Dennos Museum Center. The Jazz Ensembles, directed by Mike Hunter, include the Jazz Big Band, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and the Five-Thirty Jazz Lab Band.

In addition, the award-winning Jazz Band from Ithaca (MI) High School, directed by Kevin Smith, will be performing with the NMC Jazz Ensembles again this year. Also performing will be special guest Dan Jacobs internationally acclaimed trumpeter and recording artist. (www.jazzstandardtime.com)

The Five-Thirty Jazz Lab Band, newly formed this semester, will open the concert with selections from the Count Basie, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis and Henry Mancini orchestras. The Ithaca High School Jazz Band, winner of the Outstanding Band award (class C schools) at the CMU Jazz Weekend in 2004 and 2005, will follow with "Take the A-Train" (Strayhorn) with Dan Jacobs soloing with the band; "Julian" (Phil Woods) - a tribute to Julian "Cannonball" Adderly featuring alto sax soloist Pat Booth; and Mark Taylor's "Camba Ti Kaye", again with Dan Jacobs.

The second half of the program includes the NMC Vocal Jazz Ensemble singing rich vocal harmonies in Gene Puerling's arrangement of "The Shadow of Your Smile", Phil Mattson's arrangement of the beautiful "Why Did I Choose You?", and the swinging jazz/dixie standard "Some of These Days". Finishing the concert will be the NMC Jazz Big Band with exciting works by Bob Mintzer ("One Man Band"), Pat Metheny ("First Circle") and Benny Golson ("I Remember Clifford") with Dan Jacobs as guest soloist.

This price for this extended concert will remain at $8.00 for adults, $6.00 for students, available through the Milliken Box Office at 231 995-1553; or at the door.

Notes about the Ithaca Jazz Band: The band chooses where they would like to go each year and just traveled to New York City. While in TC, they will be attending clinics on jazz improvisation by Dan Jacobs, and Bob James. They are also planning side trips to see sights in the area, perform at a local adult care center, and record their program at the studio of Hunter Music Productions in Traverse City.

- PRESS RELEASE: UPCOMING TOUR, Dan Jacobs Quartet (May 19, 2005)
"Last night, Charlevoix High School hosted what, to jazz and blues
devotees, will be the premier musical program of the summer. Young aspiring Jazz and Blues bands from Charlevoix, Petoskey and the
Northwest Academy jazz band performed in concert, at times accompanied
and at all times cheered on by "old time jazz and blues greats."
trumpeter Dan Jacobs and Doc Woodward on organ won standing ovations
from the audience of 400, fewer than half of whom were parents.
Billed as "Spring Fever: First Annual Northern Michigan Jazz & Blues
Jam" the program was the first of what is hoped to be an annualoccurrence.

The final set, featuring Dan Jacobs on trumpet, Doc on keys, Larry
Wojick on drums, Glen Wolf on bass, Jon Archambault on guitar and
James Hunt on drums, gave the audience a taste of the professionals
doing songs like, "Georgia on my Mind" and "Let the Good Times Roll"
amongst others, though in truth, one could hardly choose which part of
the program was most impressive.

As we left the two-hour stellar presentation, one parent confided in
us that her son had become disenchanted with regular high school band
music and had dropped out of music altogether . . . 'till the Jazz
Band program came along. Dan Jacobs says he's just "giving back" a
little to the music that has given him so much. In truth, he is
giving much, much more . . . to people, young and old alike!

Northwest's, Gary Stutzman, Charlevoix's Jayne Bennet and Petoskey's
Carl Brien are complemented and appreciated as only one who has been
associated with high school students or who has a son or daughter in
such a program will understand."

Sincerely,

Howard Clayton

WORLD-CLASS JAZZ
The Obershulte Gallery on Eighth Street hosted a group of local musicians in what had to be considered a world-class jam session Wednesday evening, Aug. 27.
The group (Dan Jacobs, trumpet; Drew Abbot, guitar; Tom Sparling, piano; Roger Tarczon; drums; Jack Dryden, bass; and Newt Cole, sax) had never played together before as a group, but like all really great musicians, sounded as if they had always done so.
The musicians brought backgrounds from stints with Woody Herman, Mel Torme, Linda Ronstadt, Bob Seger, Crosby Stills and Nash, Kenny Rogers, Jazz Standard Time and many others, and they are all local guys who can play anything, anywhere, anytime ... with class.
